The N85 was quickly closed to traffic to allow rescue teams to intervene. A civil security helicopter was called upon to facilitate the rapid treatment of the victims. Ninety firefighters from the Isère departmental fire and rescue service were mobilized to the scene of the tragedy.

According to information from our colleagues, the children and their companions were members of a summer camp and had spent a week in the region. Originally from Sceaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine, they had to go to Grenoble station to take a train to Paris. Contacted by Agence France-Presse, the holiday center of this town refused to make any declaration.

An investigation was opened by the gendarmes of the gendarmerie company of La Mure. The Route Napoléon, a very steep national road linking Grenoble to Gap, is known for its dangerousness, with frequent fatal road accidents, including one in July 2007 which claimed the lives of 26 Polish pilgrims.
