Just after her defeat in the presidential election, Valérie Pécresse appealed for donations to try to reimburse her campaign expenses. A delicate financial situation which inspired Thomas Sotto this Monday 2 who indulged in a little joke on the set of Télématin.
Thomas Sotto was in a teasing mood at the beginning of the week. This Monday, May 2, the journalist François Beaudonnet was present on the set of Telematin to evoke a nice idea that could help the French to boost their purchasing power a little. The columnist thus recalled that many people often have accumulated small change lying around at home, and that very often they don’t know what to do with it. Some use it for small purchases, while others don’t hesitate to get rid of it. But François Beaudonnet presented an initiative that could allow these small parts to become very useful. “There are terminals, which will be next to supermarkets or hypermarkets. You arrive, you put your packet of coins in the terminal, it sounds like a slot machine, it’s a bit like the jackpot, and that gives you a voucher. With this voucher you go to the supermarket or hypermarket and buy something”, he indicated.
The France 2 journalist went on to explain that the regional newspaper Progress was interested in this subject and had mentioned the case of a lady who, by transforming her coins into vouchers, had been able to make shopping in the amount of 120 euros. A story that immediately inspired Thomas Sotto, who wanted to slip a little joke to his columnist. “It’s not Valerie Pécresse?”, he asked humorously. A remark that provoked the hilarity of the other speakers present around the table. But François Beaudonnet quickly managed to regain his seriousness to end his column.
Valérie Pécresse has already collected 2.5 million euros
This joke by Thomas Sotto obviously refers to the financial problems of the former presidential candidate. After having collected 4.8% of the votes in the first round, the representative Les Républicains had to face a terrible situation: by being below the symbolic bar of 5%, her party cannot be reimbursed for part of the campaign costs and must therefore pay for everything out of pocket. Valérie Pécresse even had to go into personal debt, as she explained the day after her bitter defeat. A financial situation which had also pushed the latter to make an appeal for donations. The amount to be paid would be nearly 5 million euros. But this Sunday, May 1, the president of the LR party Christian Jacob announced that Valérie Pécresse had managed to collect “approximately 2.5 million donations” until now.
