“isolated at the back of the class”, her teacher tried for harassment, her parents testify

In 2019, Evaëlle committed suicide at the age of 11 after being the victim of school bullying. While his French teacher is going to be tried for harassment, his parents have broken their silence to tell about his ordeal.

It’s a story that marked France in 2019. On June 21 of that year, an 11-year-old girl, Evaëlle Dupuisits given death by hanging himself at his home in Herblay, in Val-d’Oise. So in 6th grade, since the start of the 2018 school year, she was the victim of mockery, remarks, insults and school harassment from several students from his establishment, the Isabelle-Autissier college, in Herblay, but also from his French teacher, a certain Pascale B.

Before their daughter’s suicide, Evaëlle’s parents had filed several complaints against the children and the teacher. The latter was placed in police custody in November 2019 before being indicted in September 2020 for “harassment of a minor” then placed under judicial supervision with a ban on practicing her profession and an obligation to provide care. In December of the same year, three teenagers aged 13 were also indicted.

“Humiliated and isolated at the back of the class”

Recently, two of them were referred to the juvenile court for harassment, while the third had the case dismissed. The professor, for her part, was sent to criminal court for “moral harassment of a minor” by an investigating judge from Pontoise, we learned this Thursday, March 21, as reported 20 minutes. Suspected of having also harassed two other schoolchildren, she nevertheless obtained a dismissal of charges for a fourth student.

More specifically, she is accused of having “regularly humiliated” Evaëlle in front of her comrades, to have it “isolated at the back of the class”and to have organized “hours of classroom life relating to school bullying during which she stigmatized her as being a victim of harassment by her classmates and forced her to answer their questions”, wrote the investigating judge in her referral order. Acts which would have caused “a very significant deterioration of living conditions” but also “of the physical and mental health of the young girl”.

“She went through hell”

Following the announcement of the teacher’s referral to prison, Evaëlle’s parents spoke this Friday, March 22, on the show Apolline Morningon RMC. “It was the objective to arrive at the judgment”declares Sébastien, the young girl’s father. She went through hell. It started with her French teacher who very quickly isolated her and systematically argued with her. She put her as far away as possible, at the back of the class. The teacher initiated this harassment which the students subsequently continued.”

The teenager’s parents especially deplore the fact that their complaints were of no use. “We tried twice to file a complaint against this professor. And twice, the police refused our complaint,” assures Marie, Evaëlle’s mother. “They take the complaint against the students but tell us that, for the teacher, ‘it’s complicated, it’s long, it’s National Education'”.

After being dissuaded the first time, their daughter is heard as part of the complaint against the students. “We then ask again to file a complaint against the teacher. And a second time, they explain to us that it is complicated against a teacher and we do not take our complaint”she sighs, before concluding: “Once again we need a suicide, the loss of a child, for the investigation to be done seriously. That’s what’s a shame.”
