Pistorius: Taurus wiretapping enabled by application error

According to the Ministry of Defense, Russia recorded the Taurus meeting of Bundeswehr officers by accident. One of the participants did not comply with safety regulations – and in a place that was particularly dangerous.

In the case of the meeting between Bundeswehr officers recorded by Russia, Defense Minister Pistorius rules out that the IT technology used was hacked. The reason for the recording was rather an “individual application error,” said the SPD minister when announcing the interim results. One participant did not follow the required secure dial-in procedure. Specifically, it’s about the person involved who connected from Singapore. Pistorius expressly emphasized that, contrary to speculation to the contrary, “no unauthorized person” took part in the telephone conference.

The conclusion of the reviews so far is that “certified systems are safe when used correctly,” Pistorius continued. The Bundeswehr member took part in the aviation trade fair in Singapore. The event is of course a great success for participants from Russia. Based on the results of the investigation so far, the Ministry of Defense assumes that the recording was a “random hit in a widespread interception operation by the Russians.”

According to Pistorius, all devices will now be forensically examined. In addition, it will be checked whether only the topics discussed at the conference could be discussed in this way. The initiation of disciplinary proceedings is still open and depends on the further results of the investigation.

Pistorius also said that he had spoken to “partners in other countries” on the phone the day before. The trust is unbroken. Germany will not allow itself to be frightened by the hybrid attack from Russia. Consequences would be drawn – but with prudence.
