Several flights were canceled at Palermo Airport due to the fire. Shortly before noon, however, it was fully reopened, as the operator announced on Twitter.

The A29 motorway was also affected – three driveways were closed. In Palermo and the surrounding province, the fire brigade says it has 30 teams on duty to fight the numerous fires. Photos and videos showed the fires blazing menacingly in the distance.

Local media reported that a hospital was also threatened – according to the fire brigade, however, the fire there is under control. 1,500 people had to be evacuated in the area, as reported by the “Rai” station.

Meanwhile, severe storms were falling in northern Italy. The metropolis of Milan and large parts of Lombardy were affected on Tuesday night. There were strong gusts of wind, heavy hailstorms and rainfall. A 16-year-old died after being hit by a falling tree at a scout camp in Brescia province, Italian news agency Ansa reported.

In Milan, a passenger plane operated by the US company Delta Air Lines got caught in a storm shortly after take-off and had to abort its flight. Flight DL185 to New York was diverted to Rome, where the machine landed safely on Monday afternoon, Ansa reported. The passengers got off “normally”. The plane sustained some damage. Details were not initially given.
