ROME (Reuters) – Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni was sworn in on Saturday as the first female president of Italy’s Council of Ministers.

“I swear to be loyal to the Republic,” said Giorgia Meloni, before shaking hands with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Giorgia Meloni agreed on Friday to form a new government made up of his Fratelli d’Italia party, Matteo Salvini’s League and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia.

This new government will submit itself next week to the vote of confidence of the two chambers of Parliament.

Giancarlo Giorgetti, considered one of the most moderate and pro-European figures in the League, has been appointed to the key post of Economy Minister.

Antonio Tajani, former President of the European Parliament and member of Forza Italia, has been appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Matteo Piantedosi (without label) will head the Ministry of the Interior. The Ministry of Defense has returned to Guido Crosetto, one of the founders of Fratelli d’Italia.
