ROME (Reuters) – Giorgia Meloni said on Friday morning that she was ready to form a new government as quickly as possible in Italy, after her name was submitted by her right-wing coalition partners to President Sergio Mattarella.

“There was unanimous agreement to propose my name to be the head of the new government,” the leader of the Fratelli d’Italia party told the press after a session of consultations with the Italian president in the company of his allies, Matteo Salvini (League) and Silvio Berlusconi (Forza Italia).

“We are ready to form a government as soon as possible,” she added.

Sergio Mattarella again summoned Giorgia Meloni to the Quirinal Palace at 2:30 p.m. (12:30 GMT) on Friday, the Italian presidency’s services announced at midday.

The president should on this occasion formally instruct Giorgia Meloni to form a new government.
