According to NBC, Fitbit has recalled 1.7 million smartwatches. This is the Fitbit Ionic model, a watch released in 2017 and not sold since December 2021.
This recall is due to some 174 reports worldwide of people experiencing potentially dangerous battery overheating. In the United States, 78 people reportedly reported burns outright, including two cases of third-degree burns. Forty cases outside the United States have reported burns as well, or more than 118 people potentially injured by the Fitbit watch.
“Stop using these smartwatches immediately”
The brand acquired by Google in early 2021 requested the recall of all models following a decision by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday March 2, 2022.
The Commission asked customers to “immediately discontinue use of the recalled Ionic smartwatches and contact Fitbit to receive a prepaid package to return the device. » Fitbit has also committed to a refund of $299 and to provide a discount code allowing you to benefit from a 40% discount on part of its range. We do not yet know if this measure applies to the French market.
