Iconic host of the game show Desnumeraires et des lettres, Laurent Romejko spoke after the announcement of the end of the legendary France Télévisions show.

It’s a program that has spanned the decades. The show Numbers and letters was programmed on the air for fifty-two years. Unfortunately for early fans and fans of this show, it will not be back at the start of the 2024 school year.

Interviewed by La Tribune Sunday, last May 5, Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez, director of antennas from France Télévisions, announced the sad news. He stated : “After fifty years of existence, it is an emblematic meeting. It is a difficult decision, but we have made the choice to stop this program.” He also added: “Weekend programming has not been successful.”

Legendary presenters

Several hosts take turns presenting the famous game show. In 1970, Patrice Laffont set out. He initially collaborated with Max Favalelli. Max Meynier, Laurent Chabrol, Bertrand Renard and Arielle Boulin-Prat have also supported numerous candidates over the last fifty-two years.

In 1992, Laurent Romejko took over. He provides the general presentation of the show, the broadcast of which has been relegated to the weekend on France 3, for more than three decades. Interviewed by Mouloud Achour, in Clique, on May 6, Laurent Romejko gave his point of view on the reasons which led to the cessation of programming of the oldest French game show.

Laurent Romejko’s opinion

During the interview, he first explained: “You know, it’s a show that no longer meets the codes of the game. That is to say, it’s a show that is silent.” He further recalled: “ And games that are slow, that are silent, there aren’t any. You need a jingle, you need a burst of laughter, you need applause for each piece. . We didn’t have that.” Pragmatic, the TV host then mentioned the fact that the gains won by the candidates were not really attractive. Another reason which led to the decline in audiences for the famous game, according to him. He further recalled:

He precised : ” That is to say that unlike many games, the candidate does not come to win a car, a washing machine or 100,000 euros. We offer him a dictionary or 100 euros per match won, so, that is to say… nothing. And they finally really came to show that they were good, very good, that they were the best. Let the fans rest assured, a special show should be organized before the game show programming ends . Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez told La Tribune Sunday : “A goodbye show will bring together Patrice Laffont and Laurent Romejko and thank all the teams.”
