David Ayer, the screenwriter of the first “Fast & Furious” film, doesn’t mince his words when he talks about the saga and Hollywood in general. Zero language sequence.
David Ayer is angry. The American, known for having directed the 2016 Suicide Squad with Will Smith and Jared Leto as well as the war film Fury with Brad Pitt, recently spoke about his experience on the first Fast & Furious film, released in theaters in 2001 and including he is one of the screenwriters. And the least we can say is that he doesn’t have his tongue in his pocket!
David Ayer first tells us, in his own words, how he brought his personal touch to the first part of the Fast & Furious saga. “When I got the script, this shit was set in New York with just young Italians”, he declares in the Real Ones podcast led by actor Jon Bernthal.
“I said then that I would only make the film if the action took place in Los Angeles, and only if we saw on screen the real people I met in LA”continues the man to whom we owe the script for Training Day. “So I started writing about people of color, about the streets, about this culture. At the time, no one had heard of street racing.”
David Ayer therefore believes that if the Fast and Furious of 2001 is so realistic and stands out for its diversity, it is thanks to him. “It’s clear that I didn’t do anything stupid, right?”asks the American.

Judging to have contributed a lot to the franchise, David Ayer notes however that he has been forgotten over the years. “It’s the biggest Hollywood franchise and I made no money from it. And the reason I made no money from it, nothing, is because of the way the industry works.”then blurts out the 55-year-old filmmaker.
“There are people who hijack, control and create stories in order to give themselves power. But I have always been an outsider, I don’t go to their parties,” says David Ayer. “I don’t go to dinners, to that kind of thing. Those who do have been able to control the stories because they have socialized in the environment. Me, I have never been able to socialize in the environment, I have always been the creative guy in the shadows.”
We will have understood that David Ayer does not at all want to be friends with Hollywood in order to succeed and that he now wishes to continue his path as he sees fit, without making compromises. His next film, The Beekeeper, an action thriller led by Jason Statham, is expected in 2024.
