J.-D.-Power-Ranking – German car brands weak in quality study

German cars, and not just those from premium brands, have the reputation of being particularly good and reliable. However, recent studies have drawn a different picture. Many German brands are currently stumbling in the customer satisfaction study conducted by the US market research institute JD Power.

US rankings are a difficult place for German manufacturers. In autumn, it came last in the reliability ranking of the consumer magazine “Consumer Reports”. However, BMW and Audi made it into the top ten. Only one European brand in the top ten The situation is worse for JD Power. The only German brand in the top ten is Mini in ninth place. Asian brands make up the podium among themselves: Lexus ahead of the Hyundai brands Genesis and Kia. JD Power asked how many problems customers had with their vehicles since 2020. The result is a key that states how many problems there were per 100 vehicles. Here Lexus shines with 133 ahead of Genesis with 144 and Kia with 152. Seven of the top ten brands come from Japan. Mitsubishi ranks sixth with 167 ahead of Toyota (168), Hyundai and Nissan are tied behind with 170. The best European brand also has the same number of points here: Mini. The mother BMW made it to 15th place and is therefore just above average. Munich (184) clearly distances Porsche (208), a brand that always occupies top places in the TÜV report (only 20th place here). VW (24th place), Mercedes (27th place) and Audi (29th place) are among the bottom 20 percent. Land Rover brings up the rear with a rate of 273. The ranking is slightly distorted by the fact that Tesla is not listed because the manufacturer does not provide customer data in some states. However, Tesla would not do well – based on the available information, an index of 242 is calculated, which would only be enough for one of the bottom places. The ranking not only includes reports of technical problems, but also those from the areas of infotainment and assistance systems . Statements about the actual quality of cars or brands are therefore difficult or very undifferentiated to make on the basis of this study.
