After the assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy retreated to a historic mansion. The luxurious property is now being auctioned off – this is what the 15,300 square meters look like from the inside.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Kennedy Onassis was First Lady of the United States and a style icon of the 1960s with her pillbox hats and pearl necklaces. As Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, on September 12, 1953, she married one of the season’s most eligible bachelors: John F. Kennedy. As the second youngest US president in history, he moved into the White House in Washington, DC on January 20, 1961, together with his wife and their two children Caroline and John F. Kennedy Jr. Even then, Jackie Kennedy showed her passion for interior design – her first “Official act” was the redesign of the presidential residence.

Just two years later, Jackie Kennedy’s world would be completely turned upside down. While driving through Dallas, Texas, her first husband John was murdered while sitting next to her in the open car. After the assassination attempt on “JFK”, the grieving Jacqueline retreated to a mansion in the Georgetown district with her two small children. The historic red brick home in Washington, DC is now up for auction. According to the Concierge Auctions website, starting bids are expected to range between $5 million and $11 million.

After the assassination of John F. Kennedy: Jackie lived in this villa for a year

The Newton D. Baker House, also known as the Jacqueline Kennedy House, was built in 1794 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a luxurious reception hall and retains many of its original features, such as fireplace surrounds and moldings.

The widowed Jackie Kennedy lived there with her daughter and son for around a year. However, the property has changed significantly since Jackie’s time. In conjunction with two other villas, it has been extensively renovated and now amounts to 15,300 square meters with 13 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms. An underground tunnel connects two of the houses and leads to a private underground garage for three cars.

Other features of the former Kennedy residence include a large suite with a wellness area, a private balcony overlooking the rear gardens and a third-floor observation deck. The second house, a more modern 1950 home, features a large Italian-style entertainment room. A large, modern kitchen in the third house and bedroom with herringbone parquet made of oak make the luxurious dream home perfect.

Jackie Kennedy becomes Jackie O

In October 1968, Jacqueline Kennedy married the Greek shipowner, who was 23 years her senior Aristotle Onassis and was nicknamed “Jackie O” by the media. She first left the USA with him and their children and lived on the Greek island of Skorpios and in Paris. Jackie Kennedy Onassis died in 1994 at the age of 64; her daughter Caroline is now the US ambassador to Australia. Over the past decade, several of the former first lady’s homes have been up for sale.
