Monday, December 27, 2021, France 3 broadcast the documentary Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. In the latter, the eldest son of Jacques Martin revealed a funny anecdote about his father.
In order to tell the story of New Years Eve on the small screen, the documentary Merry Christmas and Happy New Year has delved into sixty years of archives. The opportunity to rediscover Paul Bocuse in The Large Cocotte. While demonstrating how to make a Christmas turkey with truffles, the chef explained: “You have to have a garden. The story is very true, I’ll explain why. We dig a hole in the ground and we bury the turkey for a day to two days in his garden. The land is cold, it feels a bit like a fridge. The smell of the truffle put back in the ground, it is fresh truffle and the whole turkey is imbued with the smell of truffle.“He added:”But then you have to be careful, because one year, it had snowed, and it was impossible to find the turkeys. So what do we do now? We put a stake there and we know at each stake that there is the turkey.“
With humor, Paul Bocuse explained: “But you have to have a walled garden, because I can’t see you going to bury your turkey in the Tuileries!” While putting the turkey in the ground gives it more flavor, Jacques Martin and his eldest son, David, have tried the experiment. In the show, the latter said: “It’s something that almost took us to jail! At the time, my father lived in a small house with a small garden behind. Corn a Parisian garden, therefore with a vis-à-vis … People who were at their windows as well. For some, knew that Jacques Martin lived there.“
David Martin: “We had the cops ringing the doorbell”
With a smile on his face, Jacques Martin’s son said: “We buried the poultry, but they thought we were burying something dead, but not a poultry. No one could imagine burying a poultry! We had the cops ringing the doorbell saying, ‘Hello! Oh, Mr. Martin, sorry. We were told that … ‘” Finally, all ended well for the duo, who were able to taste their turkey at Christmas!
