Jan Ullrich: former German cyclist hospitalized after relapsing into alcohol

New descent into hell by Jan Ullrich. After escaping death in 2018, the former German champion was admitted to a Swiss clinic after relapsing into his addiction and consuming a significant amount of alcohol, Bild reported.

The winner of the 1997 Tour de France is going through yet another very complicated stage in his life. With a story of the heart at the origin of his new setbacks. Spent a few days in Cuba, where he notably celebrated his 48e birthday, he suffered a romantic break-up that plunged him back into alcoholism. On his return to Germany, he would have boarded the plane completely drunk to the point of having to be transported to hospital during a stopover in Mexico. He was then transferred to a clinic in Switzerland, where he will have to undergo therapy to treat his ailments which have been eating away at him since the end of his career in 2006.

Because this is not the first time that Jan Ullrich has been talked about in this way. In 2018, he made the headlines after assaulting a prostitute. This case had earned him to be interned in a psychiatric ward for several weeks. After falling into drugs and alcohol, he was even on the verge of suicide.

“You already know my story, three years ago I was in terrible pain. You came to see me and I was on the same path as Marco Pantani, almost dead. And then I recovered and I have good friends, including you, who brought me to life. Now, I’m very happy, ”Ullrich said a few weeks ago in the podcast of Lance Armstrong, his former rival who has become one of his closest friends.

“I stopped using alcohol and drugs three years ago. Now I live in a very healthy way, my girlfriend cooks very healthily for me. It got me in shape and made me feel good, ”added the former cyclist. But that was before her romantic break-up and this terrible relapse. It remains to be seen whether he will succeed in climbing the slope again.
