“Jane Birkin”, Mika’s new tribute track: our opinion

As he prepares to return to the ranks of The Voice as coach, Mika unveils a new title this Friday, November 14, in tribute to the late Jane Birkin.

“Dear Jane, I particularly loved you, you inspired me to write a title that I will share later. Dear Jane, we will miss you so much…“, wrote Mika upon learning of the death of icon Jane Birkin. This Friday, the time to unveil this title has finally come. After the release of That’s lifefirst single from his new album which is scheduled for release on December 1st, he finally reveals the song simply called Jane Birkin.

Although he is not British, Mika shares some similarities with Jane Birkin. Both English speakers, they nevertheless sing in the language of Molière and are very popular here in France. The interpreter of “Je t’aime… moi non plus” always has a real reference for the artist, and this, for different reasons.

Mika, big fan of Jane Birkin

To begin with, his mother had the same voice and the same slight British accent… and especially becauseshe embodied freedom, modernity, madness who inspired him, she who mixed infinite sweetness with the great strength that she represented according to him. “Birkin was an icon of sensuality, she embodied elegance without effort, candor without vulgarity. he always declared to Le Parisien, at the time of the singer’s death.

Written during the lifetime of Serge Gainsbourg’s former partner, this song is today transformed into a vibrant and heady tribute. “In this title, I confront nudity, I defend a liberated love, without shame. A love à la Birkin is a sensual, poetic and shameless love. These are also the ingredients of this album“, he explained to Parisian a few weeks ago.

“Jane Birkin” by Mika: our opinion!

Now that the context is established, what is the value of this new song from the coach of The Voice, which we will also find in the next season in 2024? From the first seconds, Mika’s signature pop and catchy rhythm makes us want to sway our hips. But as usual, beneath its colorful and joyful sounds lies a strong message, that of acceptance and self-love, like a call to free oneself from the gaze of others.

Lyrically, Mika, who once again focuses on French, sets the tone from the first lines, with poetry: “Free as air, live my way”. After just one listen, we’re already humming the heady chorus: “I’m not comfortable in my blue jeans, I’m dreaming of a love like the Birkin”. The trademark of the tubes? Jane Birkin, sung by Mika, to be found this Friday, November 17 on all audio streaming platforms.
