Jeep Introduces New Hybrid Powertrain to Renegade and Compass

The Jeep Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid will benefit from a new hybrid engine consisting of a 1.5 Turbo 130 hp engine, coupled to a 15 kW electric motor. A drop of up to 15% in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions is expected.

You have to believe that Jeep is the darling of the Stellantis group (PSA/Opel + Fiat-Chrysler). Last week, the manufacturer announced that the Fiat 500X should not benefit from the brand new hybrid engine, which will be inaugurated by Jeep on the Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid. Under the hood, there will be a 1.5 l 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 130 hp (240 Nm torque), coupled to an electric motor (48V) delivering 15 kW (20 hp – 55 Nm). Everything will be associated with a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (code name 7HDT300).

According to the Jeep press release, thanks to this new engine, the Renegade and Compass will be able to move in all-electric mode without the heat engine running. Thus, when starting or restarting at traffic lights, at low speed, in traffic jams, in reverse and during parking maneuvers, it is only the electric motor that will serve as a thruster.

Finally, the icing on the cake, this new engine will offer “up to 15% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than previous petrol models”, says the manufacturer.

Concretely, the new Jeep Renegade e-Hybrid is announced with CO2 emissions ranging from 130 to 137 g/km, against 144 to 151 g/km for the 1.0 l 120 hp petrol unit with manual gearbox. Result, a penalty of only €240 instead of a maximum of €1,074. The Compass e-Hybrid, it would reject between 129 and 134 g / km of CO2, against 152 to 157 g / km for the 1.3 turbo of 130 hp. Here too, the malus bill is affected: €190 against €1,761 for the highest bracket.

Giving priority to this new hybrid engine to Jeep is explained by the “(…) success of the current range of 4xe plug-in hybrid vehicles”, says Antonella Bruno, Head of the Jeep Europe brand. And to add that these new Renegade and Compass will constitute “a further step towards the full electrification of our product range in Europe”.

You should know that Jeeps with 4xe plug-in hybrid engines “currently represent more than 25% of the brand’s total sales in Europe.” In France, these 4xe versions “reached more than 50% of total sales”, recalls the manufacturer.

Prices for these new hybrid models start from €29,950 for a Renegade and €36,950 for a Compass. Order taking is already open for France, Italy and Germany.
