“Dirty Dancing” star awards “Cabaret” legend: Jennifer Gray presented her father Joel Gray with the Tony Award for his life’s work.

Special honor for Jennifer Gray (63): The “Dirty Dancing” actress awarded her father an award for his life’s work on Sunday. Joel Gray (91), who won an Oscar for his role in “Cabaret”, was recognized at the Tony Awards for his stage career.

In one of her now-rare public appearances, Jennifer Gray walked the red carpet with her dad. She wore a fitted, strapless black dress. Joel Gray arrived in an old school tuxedo.

With the words “Hello, my father’s friends and colleagues,” Jennifer Gray greeted the audience. According to media reports with a troubled voice. After a clip showed Joel Gray’s greatest moments, his daughter brought him onto the stage. “Your hero, my hero,” she said.

The stage veteran was touched. “My daughter, my beautiful, my sweet,” he said. And referring to her weight at birth: “7 pounds and 11 ounces” (about 3.5 kilos).

Joel Gray: Tony and Oscar for “Cabaret”

Joel Grey, born in 1932 to comedian Mickey Katz, has been active on Broadway since the 1950s. From 1966 he played the emcee in the musical “Cabaret” and won the Tony Award for this role. He also played the part in the 1972 film adaptation. It won the Oscar for Best Supporting Role for its weird and spooky performance.

Although Joel Gray has appeared time and again in the cinema (e.g. “Dancer in the Dark”) or on television, he has remained true to the theater above all. He played the Wizard of Oz in the original performance of the musical “Wicked – The Witches of Oz”.
