Jeremy Clarkson is not on good terms with Duchess Meghan. In a column he railed against her and now has to fear the consequences.

The British star presenter and author Jeremy Clarkson (62) may have overstepped the mark. In his column in the British tabloid “The Sun” a few weeks ago he insulted Duchess Meghan (41) in sometimes nasty and rude words. Among other things, he claimed that she would control Prince Harry (38). He dreams of the day “where she has to walk the streets of every city in Britain naked while the crowd chants ‘shame’ and throws excrement at her,” Clarkson said. “Everyone my age thinks like me,” Clarkson surmises.

This comment, which was intended as a reaction to the Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan”, could now have consequences for the former “Top Gear” host. The British media have unanimously reported that the British press regulator has launched an official inquiry after receiving more than 25,000 complaints about Clarkson’s tirade. “The Sun” then replaced the post with an apology from Jeremy Clarkson and also asked for forgiveness from Meghan and Prince Harry.

According to the British media, this apology was not accepted: “The fact that ‘The Sun’ has not contacted the Duchess of Sussex to apologize shows her intention. This is nothing but a PR stunt,” said the spokesman of the royal couple according to “The Guardian”. “While the public absolutely deserves the paper’s regret for the dangerous comments, we wouldn’t be in this situation if The Sun didn’t continually exploit and capitalize on hate, violence and misogyny.”

Emily Clarkson, daughter of Jeremy Clarkson, positions herself against his father

Clarkson’s daughter, the well-known podcaster Emily Clarkson (28), also clearly opposed her father in one of her episodes: “My views are and have always been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying or the general treatment of women in the media I want to be very clear that I’m against anything my dad has written about Meghan Markle.”

Clarkson follows up with an apology

In mid-January, Clarkson released a six-page statement on the matter on his Instagram account. In it he states “that he is truly sorry”. It was only after the publication and the ensuing storm of indignation that he realized that his post sounded like calling for violence against Meghan. “I’m not a sexist and I abhor violence against women. And yet I seemed to support just that.”

On Christmas morning he also apologized directly to Harry and Meghan via email, Clarkson continues. His choice of words was “pathetic” and he was “deeply sorry”, according to his email. It is not clear from his text whether the two accepted his apology.

Off at Amazon?

Amazon is said to have already drawn consequences. According to a “Variety” report the contract with the moderator cannot be renewed. His shows “The Grand Tour” and “Clarkson’s Farm” are still being filmed, but that’s the end of it. The new season of the British series “Clarkson’s Farm” starts today, Friday.

In addition to his involvement with Amazon, Clarkson has been the presenter of the English edition of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” since 2018. Shortly after the scandal, however, it was said according to “The Guardian” that Clarkson could remain the show master of the format until further notice.
