One person is dead and “a dozen” others are missing after an explosion in a residential building in Jersey, police in the Channel Island said on Saturday. “A dozen” residents of this building in St Helier, in the south of the island, are still missing, said local police chief Robin Smith, adding that a “big explosion” had taken place around 4 a.m. this Saturday morning. A fire was also started but it was brought under control by the firefighters who are still on the spot, said the police while many ambulances were on the scene.

Nearly 30 people evacuated from the neighborhood

“Emergency services are working on the spot and have started a search of the site,” police said, asking residents to avoid the area. According to Robin Smith, two injured people were taken to hospital and 20 to 30 people were evacuated from the area and received at St Helier Town Hall.

“Given the destruction of the building, it is difficult to precisely assess the number” of missing people, admitted the head of government of Jersey, Kristina Moore, specifying that the clearing of the premises could take “several days”.
