Jim Carrey quiz: 1 look, 1 film, you guess!

The Truman show came out on Wednesday in our dark rooms. The opportunity to test your knowledge of Jim Carrey’s career and his looks in his films.

The Truman Show, Peter Weir’s cult film starring Jim Carrey was released in our theaters on Wednesday after being presented in Cannes at the Cinéma de la Plage. The 75th edition of the Festival also paid tribute to the film by taking the final scene for its poster.

In the feature film Jim Carrey embodies Truman Burbank, a man who leads a calm and happy life. He lives in a small pavilion in the radiant seaside resort of Seahaven. He leaves every morning for his office as an insurance agent, from which he comes out eight hours later to return home, to savor the comfort of his model home, the unfailing good humor and the mechanical smile of his wife, Meryl.

But sometimes, Truman suffocates under so much happiness and the night the anguish overwhelms him. He feels more and more alien, as if those around him are playing a role. He feels watched…

Released in 1998, the feature film that foreshadowed the explosion of reality TV allowed Jim Carrey to win a Golden Globe for his performance in The Truman Show.

Today, and as the comedian recently announced that he will be retiring, here is a quiz on the looks of Jim Carrey in his films.

Did you know ?

  • The film named after a psychiatric disorder that involves believing one’s life is a reality TV show. This very real disorder is now called “Truman Syndrome”.
  • The set of The Truman Show is supposed to be located 20 miles behind the Hollywood sign and its hills. However, in the satellite view, the game would be located in the southern Los Angeles area.
  • In the film, Truman’s boat is called the Santa Maria after one of Christopher Columbus’s ships that set out to discover America. Symbolically, this means that Truman too sets out to conquer a new world when he wishes to escape from his televised prison.
  • Dennis Hopper initially took on the role of Christof (it eventually went to Ed Harris) before leaving the set for unknown reasons. The irony is that Hopper starred the following year in Ron Howard’s Live on Ed TV, which had the same subject as The Truman Show: the hype of privacy.
  • Usually illustrating himself in the comic register, Jim Carrey tries his hand at drama for the first time with The Truman Show. A genre that he will later love with films like Man on the Moon by Milos Forman and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry.
  • Like their character in the film, actors Jim Carrey and Ed Harris never saw each other during filming.
