The world is eagerly awaiting the inauguration in the United States. The ceremony on January 20, 2021 marks the beginning of the term of office of the new US President Joe Biden (78, "Promise me") and his Vice President Kamala Harris (56). The whole thing is accompanied by festivities at which pop superstar Lady Gaga (34) will sing the US anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner".
The new President's term of office begins at 12:00 noon (Eastern Standard Time), which is 6:00 p.m. German time. The new head of state of the United States then – or a few minutes later – takes his oath and gives his first speech in the new office. Here is a selection of ways to watch the spectacle live.
Live reporting on German TV and online
"Weltspiegel extra: Joe Biden – America's new President" can be seen on the first from 5:15 p.m. The inauguration will be broadcast live on the show. The news channel n-tv is planning to broadcast several editions of "News Special: Change of Power in the White House" starting at 12:30 pm, in which experts, politicians and correspondents, among others, will give their assessments. The news channel WELT will also be reporting live on the inauguration from 4:00 p.m. – until at least 10:00 p.m. US correspondent Steffen Schwarzkopf as well as reporters Nancy Lanzendörfer and Daniela Will are connected from the United States, in the news studio in Berlin the whole thing is accompanied by Lena Mosel, Carsten Hädler and Marie Przibylla. The reports are loosened up with numerous documentaries and a big TV special in which countless stars will take part. Arte will show "Joe Biden – The Portrait" from 10:10 pm.
Meanwhile, the ZDF is broadcasting "Auslandsjournal – die doku: Comeback for America?" from 10:15 pm and "Donald first – Trump's attack on America" from 10:45 pm. That night "Auslandsjournal – die doku: American Dreams" followed at 12:45 am and "Trump's Legacy – The Torn America" at 1:35 am. Meanwhile, Phoenix will present "Tops and Flops in the White House – America's Presidents" at 8:15 pm and presenter Alexander Kähler will invite guests to a "phoenix round" from 11:30 pm.
In the USA there will also be a big TV special in which both Harris and Biden will have their say again. The show is hosted by Oscar winner Tom Hanks (64, "Forrest Gump"), guests such as Jon Bon Jovi (58), Justin Timberlake (39), Demi Lovato (28), Bruce Springsteen (71) and Eva Longoria (45) welcomed. The special is called "Celebrating America" and will be broadcast by the stations ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC from 02:30 am German time.
