“Joker” by Todd Philipps has just been released in cinemas for Warner’s 100th anniversary. The opportunity to take stock of the sequel planned in our theaters in October 2024.
Joker by Todd Philipps was released this Wednesday, June 7 in our dark rooms to celebrate 100 years of Warner Bros. Released in October 2019, the feature film was an international triumph, grossing $1.07 billion at the global box office, and won two Oscars (Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir. )
Faced with this success, a sequel is announced. In June 2022, Todd Philipps unveils the title and release date of this second opus. Joker: Folie à deux will be released in theaters in October 2024. Shortly after, the filmmaker announced that Lady Gaga will play Harley Quinn opposite the Joker, Joaquin Phoenix in this film in the form of a musical.
If the first opus had cost “only” 55 million dollars, the sequel saw its budget triple. According variety, the production costs of Joker 2 reach 150 million dollars. A spectacular increase which is due to inflation, health measures linked to Covid, the complexity of certain scenes but also the increase in wages.
The director, co-writer and producer Todd Phillips will receive 20 million dollars, just like Joaquin Phoenix, who had only received $ 4.5 million for his role as Arthur Fleck, which won him the Oscar for best actor. A newcomer to the universe, Lady Gaga will receive $10 million. Between them, they will therefore represent a third of the budget. The two stars will be surrounded by Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener.
Joker: Madness for two will plunge us into the corridors of Arkham Asylum to tell the meeting between Harley Quinn and her dear clown. The two heroes should then meet in the Bronx for a dance on the stairs already seen in the first film. At least that’s what a video taken by paparazzi during the filming of the feature film suggests.
The production of the feature film began in December and was completed on April 6 in New York. Todd Philipps then shared on his Instagram account two photos of his actors accompanied by the message: “It’s in the box. Thank you to these two (and the entire cast) and the BEST crew the film industry has to offer. I will now take refuge in a cave (the editing room) and collect everything.“
The director is therefore in the editing room alongside Jeff Groth, already chief editor of the first part. While waiting to see the rest of the adventures of Arthur Fleck in the cinema on October 2, 2024, rediscover the Joker in your theaters.
