Under the name “Blue Origin”, multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos (57) has really big plans: With the company founded in 2000, Bezos wants to carry out manned journeys into space. What was previously only withheld from trained astronauts is now to be made possible for private customers as well.
Bezos wants to take his first trip into space with his brother Mark – but not only. On Saturday, after a month-long online auction, the ticket for a third place in the “New Shepard” space capsule was finally bought. The price: a mere 28 million US dollars.
The identity of the highest bidder with the necessary change has so far been kept secret. If everything goes according to plan, the person is expected on July 20th in Culberson County in western Texas. The launch of the Blue Origin rocket is scheduled for that date.
Trip takes around ten minutes
As expensive as the space flight is, the trip in the capsule is a short pleasure. After just three minutes, weightlessness should begin for the participants. Shortly afterwards, the “New Shepard” returns to the earth’s atmosphere, where it is supposed to return safely to the surface thanks to large parachutes. The journey is expected to take around ten minutes in total.
With the project, Bezos joins a number of mega-empires who want to enable the flight into space. While the space company SpaceX from Tesla boss Elon Musk (49) has only ever transported astronauts into space, the British billionaire Richard Branson (70) is also working on a way to bring paying guests into space with his “Galactic Holdings” .
