Juliette Gréco: Well-known chanson singer has died

She made a name for herself as a chanson singer and actress. Juliette Gréco has now died at the age of 93.

Chanson icon Juliette Gréco died at the age of 93. This was confirmed by the family, according to the French news magazine "L'Obs" of the AFP news agency. She died on Wednesday at her home in Ramatuelle, southern France. In the 50s and 60s, Gréco delighted audiences with chansons such as "Je suis comme je suis", "L'accordéon", "La Javanaise" or "Déshabillez-moi".

Gréco was born on February 7, 1927 in Montpellier, France. She made her first public appearance in 1937 at the age of ten. It was discovered by the French philosopher and existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) in a cellar bar in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district of Paris. He then wrote her some texts and she was hailed as the "Queen of Existentialists". In 1959 she appeared for the first time in the Federal Republic. In addition to singing, Gréco also devoted herself to acting; she celebrated her first leading role in "Quand tu liras cette lettre" in 1953. This was followed by roles in "The Roots of Heaven" or "Crack in the Mirror".

After failed marriages, in 1988 she married the pianist Gérard Jouannest (1933-2018), her long-time musical companion. She celebrated her departure from the musical world starting in 2015 with her tour "Merci", on which she thanked her loyal fans. Gréco last lived withdrawn and did not appear again.
