Just one day before the Bayern game: RB Leipzig throws out sports director Max Eberl

RB Leipzig throws out sports director Max Eberl

DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig throw Max Eberl out. The sports director, who was only hired in December 2022, is leaving Leipzig with immediate effect. He is accused of a “lack of commitment”. The decision will be announced just one day before the top game against FC Bayern Munich.

RB Leipzig has surprisingly parted ways with sports director Max Eberl. The 50-year-old has been released with immediate effect and sports director Rouven Schröder will take over the sporting management of the Bundesliga club, the cup winner announced a day before the top game against FC Bayern Munich.

The Saxons accused him of a lack of commitment to Leipzig. “The lack of commitment to the club has led us to make this decision. This is completely independent of the squad change and the sporting results,” the RB statement continued.

RB Leipzig have won four of five Bundesliga games so far this season. They only suffered a defeat in Leverkusen at the start of the season. After a turbulent transfer summer with the loss of numerous key players such as Josko Gvardiol, Dominik Szobszlai and Christopher Nkunku, Eberl caused a stir on the transfer market with the transfers and loans of Lois Openda, Castello Lukeba, Benjamin Sesko and, above all, the Dutchman Xavi Simons.

Eberl only came to Leipzig in December 2022

Eberl was recently linked again in the media with a possible move to FC Bayern. In view of these speculations, he referred this week to his contract with the cup winners and emphasized that it was not about him, but about the duel with Munich. As “Bild” reports, the powerful managing director of Red Bull GmbH, Oliver Mintzlaff, is said to have “missed a clear denial of those rumors.”

Eberl only took up his position in Leipzig last December after resigning from Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2022, citing his own exhaustion. The 50-year-old has already been considered a candidate for FC Bayern several times in the past. According to the club, he had a “long-term contract” in Leipzig.

In July, the Munich team hired Christoph Freund as sports director, effectively the successor to sports director Hasan Salihamidžić. Eberl began his active football career at FC Bayern.
