Written around the 4th century AD. J.-C. by Vâtsyâyana (who was a brahman, that is to say an Indian religious), the Kamasutra is composed of seven books in which the author applied himself to transcribing and summarizing other works of reference concerning love, which have become too difficult to access.
In Sanskrit (the language of Hindu and Buddhist religious texts), “sutra” designates a religious or scientific text and “Kâma” means “love”, “desire”, “passion”… But also designates the god of love carnal, the Indian equivalent of Eros or Cupid.
It was Sir Richard Burton who, in 1883, brought the Kamasutra back to England. Obviously, the book caused a scandal… And since then, it’s been the reference book when it comes to sexual positions.
The philosophy of Kamasutra
In the Indian book, we can read “During the sexual act, if the thoughts of the two partners are different, it is as if there were the union of two corpses”. In other words, the Kamasutra is not just a catalog of sexual positions. It is also a philosophy that puts the feeling of love and mental communion in the foreground during sexual relations. And contrary to popular belief, the Kamasutra does not only deal with sexuality and couple relationships. It was a comprehensive guide to etiquette for the upper classes in India.
