There will be a total of six “Kaiser-Karl” episodes: As the streaming service announced, Karl Lagerfeld will be honored in a mini-series.

Posthumous accolade for the cult designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019). Disney + has commissioned a six-part series about the native of Hamburg, as the streaming service announced on Tuesday. The drama series “Kaiser Karl” is to be shot in Paris and will trace Lagerfeld’s rise in the local fashion world in the early 1970s. It is based on the biography of the same name by Raphaëlle Bacqué (57), who is also involved in the production.

The story begins in the summer of 1972 and follows Lagerfeld’s endeavors to succeed Coco Chanel (1883-1971), who died the year before, and thus overtake Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) as the greatest fashion personality. The series will also focus on the rivalry between Lagerfeld and Pierre Bergé (1920-2017) – Laurent’s partner – and Lagerfeld’s love story with Jacques de Bascher (1951-1989).

Karl Lagerfeld’s history not yet “adequately recognized”

Jan Koeppen, President of The Walt Disney Company EMEA, believes that Lagerfeld’s history has not yet been properly appreciated. Christophe Riandèe, Vice President of the Gaumon production company, which is also responsible for the Netflix series “Lupine”, says: “Kaiser Karl is an icon of the century and Disney has been very supportive of us from the start by sharing our creative vision for the show . “

It is not yet known who will direct or which actor will slip into the role of Lagerfeld. In September 2020, the German production company Ziegler Film announced a mini-series about the designer. Here, too, the early Parisian years, the connection to Laurent and the love for Bascher will be discussed.
