It is therefore in this yellow dress that Kate Middleton found Tom Cruise in the grandstand of Wimbledon, before presenting the trophy to the finalist Elena Rybakina, who dismissed her rival in three sets. A gesture that could have been controversial for the Duchess of Cambridge, who preferred to play the card of impartiality to “congratulate someone from Russia”, as former Russian player Andrei Chesnokov pointed out. Indeed, if the young woman played under the flag of Kazakhstan, it was in Moscow that she was born in 1999. While Russian and Belarusian players were excluded from all championships in protest against the invasion in Ukraine, Elena Rybakina was able to escape this measure thanks to her Kazakh naturalization, obtained in 2018.
