“I think I scared my husband”

Katja Burkard is a family man: she and daughter Marie-Therese are of one heart and soul. She has been in a relationship with partner Hans Mahr for 24 years – without a marriage certificate. The RTL presenter talks about the reasons at GALA.
RTL presenter Katja Burkard, 57, has been in a relationship with the Austrian journalist Hans Mahr, 73, for 24 years. Together they have two children. However, they never got married – for good reason.
Katja Burkard: marriage proposal? “Please don’t do this”
Katja Burkard and Hans Mahr “at some point missed the time” to marry, says the presenter at GALA. “Then I had the feeling that on my 50th birthday Hans wanted to propose to me publicly,” said the 57-year-old, adding: “I told him: ‘Please don’t do that.’ I think it’s really that bad and now I think I scared him off.”

It was also not easy for Katja Burkard to accept that her eldest went her own way. Marie-Therese left home last year to study. A nightmare for her.
“When she left the house, I cried snot and water and my mother always cried so much when I came home and then left again. I swore to myself I’ll never, ever, ever do that, but that one time I was like, oh my god, they’re not coming back, but I raised her to want out and be curious.” Marie-Therese is currently studying in Spain and is currently working in Vienna.
GALA makes it clear how close the two are. In a video message, Marie-Therese moves her mother to tears. The audience will find out how she manages to do this on July 16 from 5:45 p.m. on RTL.
