NAIROBI (Reuters) – William Ruto was sworn in on Tuesday, becoming Kenya’s fifth president since independence, succeeding Uhuru Kenyatta, whose vice-president he served from 2013 to his election.

Aged 55, William Ruto was declared the winner of the Kenyan presidential election in mid-August by the electoral commission, despite the divisions within this body.

Defeated opposition candidate Raila Odinga, 77, who was running for president for the fifth time and enjoyed the support of Uhuru Kenyatta, his former rival, exposed massive fraud and appealed to the Supreme Court, without success since the body confirmed last Monday the victory of William Ruto.
