“Kia Challenge” instead of GTA: TikTok video causes car theft boom in the USA

Stealing cars in GTA is apparently no longer enough for some young people. In the US they are now hijacking real cars. The trigger for this is apparently the TikTok trend “Kia Challenge”.

With the “Kia Challenge” a dangerous trend is spreading on TikTok. The so-called challenge involves stealing a car and destroying it in the most spectacular way possible. Kia and Hyundai cars are affected. Because these can be cracked with little effort and a USB cable.

Instructions for this were shared on the TikTok video platform by two teenagers who call themselves “Kia Boys” and probably triggered the trend that police departments in the USA are now increasingly warning of on Twitter – such as the police in the city of St. Petersburg in Florida.

Because, as the newspaper USA Today reports in its online edition, thefts of such cars have recently increased across the country. The authorities advise anyone who drives a vehicle from the affected brands to never leave it unlocked and also to purchase a steering wheel lock.

Not all cars of the brands are affected, only those that can be started with a key. In addition, at Kia only models built between 2011 and 2021 are susceptible to the procedure, at Hyundai, however, vehicles that were built after 2015.
