King Frederik completed a three-day state visit to Poland. However, his first trip as monarch was not well received by everyone – the Danish regent faces all sorts of headwinds.

King Frederik, 55, was on a state visit to Poland from January 31st to February 2nd, 2024. On his first evening in Warsaw, President Andrzej Duda, 51, gave a banquet for the Danish regent. The dinner was attended by business people involved in the campaign to promote green businesses. The entire trip focused on “energy efficiency, climate-friendly agriculture and biogas,” as the palace previously announced on its official Instagram account. However, when it comes to environmental protection, Frederik made a devastating faux pas, for which he is now being criticized.

There is a hail of criticism for King Frederik’s state visit to Poland

Because according to “Ekstra Bladet” King Frederik arrived in Poland on a private plane from the Defense Forces. Ivan Lund Pedersen, spokesman for the environmental organization NOAH, emphasized to the Danish newspaper how unfortunate this journey was. “It’s not the best signal. As an environmentalist, I don’t like that. He would have had to take a commercial flight. It might be possible to get security guards on board,” said Pedersen. When the monarch talks about climate, he has to “use the available transport options. It’s embarrassing. […] He still needs to learn a little more about how to be considerate of the environment, which he says he cares about.”

“This could have been prevented by…”

William Atak also notes that the palace could have done more to explain the background to the king’s trip on the defense aircraft. “You could have prevented this by saying that you would like to do something, but that the alternatives were either too slow or too difficult to get to work with the safety required,” he tells the publication. This “communication challenge” should have been planned better: “Especially when we are dealing with a climate-conscious king, so that there is no mistrust of the monarch’s ambition to be a climate activist.”
