King Frederik, 55, and Queen Mary, 51, have been particularly radiant since the proclamation and appear in public in a good mood. However, the new royal couple continues to hold back when it comes to interacting with the media. When shocking revelations about the elite boarding school became public in the summer of 2022, the royals initially kept quiet. It wasn’t until September of the same year that they took action and took the then 16-year-old Prince Christian out of school. Then Mary spoke up about this for the first time. “It was a very intense time that was very busy and weighed heavily on us in the family,” she told Billed Bladet.

Even after the affair rumors surrounding Frederik and the Mexican celebrity Genoveva Casanova, 47 – the two were spotted together in Madrid in November 2023 – neither the palace nor the current monarch have yet taken a position. A royal expert is now commenting on the “loud silence” with which the royal palace has been dealing with the press for some time.

King Frederik avoids interactions with the media

“The royal family wants to take control of their communications themselves, rather than putting them in the hands of the media,” communications expert William Atak told Ekstra Bladet, adding: “I think it’s due to a mixture of anger and sadness the royal couple about the way the media reported on Herlufsholm and the Madrid case.” According to Atak, however, it is also because the 55-year-old is “not as sharp a rhetorician” as his mother Queen Margrethe, 83.

Although the royal family’s secrecy could be interpreted as a “step in the wrong direction”, according to the expert it would not have any consequences. The Danish royal family is very popular and is still very active on social media. “The royal family is taking responsibility for communication on other channels and therefore will not lose popularity,” William Atak is sure.
