King Frederik sealed his proclamation with a kiss with Queen Mary on the castle balcony. A royal expert now has clear words about the public displays of affection.

After the change of throne and the official proclamation, King Frederik, 55, and Queen Mary, 51, beamed with joy on the balcony of the castle with their children Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and the twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 13 Christiansborg shown. After exchanging furtive glances several times, the couple finally shared a tender kiss. The crowd in attendance cheered deafeningly loudly. A royal expert now shares his opinion about the now legendary balcony kiss.

What King Frederik and Queen Mary’s balcony kiss means

The romantic kiss was not only admired by the royal fans present and countless TV viewers, the royal couple’s children also reacted in a cute way. Christian, Isabella and Josephine can be seen in the background of the kissing picture: they are laughing and seem to be happy with their parents.

Although such public displays of affection are not exactly common during a proclamation, nobility expert Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen is not surprised by the scene. “It was as it should be,” he told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, adding: “Prince Henrik kissed Margrethe’s hand back then, so this time we got a kiss too.” However, the kiss between Mary and Frederik was “much more at eye level and ‘partnership’ than back then.” Because Prince Henrik’s kiss on the hand symbolized “a different kind of reverence.” “Nowadays you probably expect something more equal,” said the historian.

The proclamation was well received by the people

Regarding the overall impression of the proclamation, Olden-Jørgensen emphasizes that King Frederik was “visibly moved”. The royal expert is not sure whether the monarch was able to enjoy it all. But he adds: “He did it well. The important thing is how it was received. And there was no doubt that it was received brilliantly. Everything was a little freer than usual.”
