Kong Skull Island on TF1: is the future of the MonsterVerse compromised?

Launched with a new Godzilla in 2014 then a new Kong, broadcast tonight on TF1, the MonsterVerse reached its climax with Godzilla vs Kong last year. Are other films nonetheless planned in this universe?

In 2014, Godzilla returned to the cinema screens in a film by Gareth Edwards, marking the beginning of a shared universe à la Marvel which, instead of bringing together superheroes, would meet two iconic monsters of the 7th Art: Godzilla and King Kong.

But before their famous clash orchestrated by Adam Wingard last year in the midst of a pandemic, two other films saw the light of day: Kong: Skull Island by Jordan Vogt-Roberts in 2017 and Godzilla 2 – King of the Monsters by Michael Dougherty in 2019.

And if for the moment, no new episode of this universe known as MonsterVerse is officially in the works, Warner and Legendary Pictures intend to remedy it in the future.

Encouraging success

It must be said that Godzilla vs Kong recorded excellent results at the global box office even though it was deprived of theatrical release in certain countries, including France where it landed in digital purchase last April, and that ‘in the United States, it was simultaneously available in theaters and on HBO Max.

But that didn’t stop the blockbuster from raking in over $ 467 million and ranking 8th in the world’s biggest hits of 2021 ahead of Marvel Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, The Eternals and Black Widow. or Dune.

From last April, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment, Josh Grode, assured that the studio had “several ideas for more movies”In the MonsterVerse and a few weeks later, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that the producers were in discussions with Adam Wingard for a potentially Kong-centric feature film titled Son of Kong.

In addition, an animated series in the world of the giant gorilla is also in development on the Netflix side. Known simply as Skull Island, it will follow a group of adventurers who try to escape from the island well guarded by the titan Kong, where prehistoric monsters are also hiding.

A tantalizing teasing

And if confirmation of a new feature film is long overdue, screenwriter Max Borenstein, who helped write all episodes of the MonsterVerse, remains very optimistic.

I’ve heard of some exciting things going on that I can’t divulge. They have a great handle on things there and I certainly have ideas. I am always excited when I am involved in these things. I think the project is in good hands and that with the success of Godzilla vs Kong there will be some interesting new episodes.”, He confided to Screen Rant last August. To watch therefore!
