The Krampus Run in Klagenfurt attracts an incredible 50,000 visitors on Saturday. The entire city center, some of which is cordoned off, is a scary area. 800 Kramperl from Austria, Bavaria, the Czech Republic and South Tyrol rush along the 1.6 kilometer course behind St. Nicholas on the Krampus Parkour from the state government to the Old Square, frightening people. It will be the devil’s holiday. The Krampus parade has been going on since 1991, and this year, for the first time, female Krampus will be there with the Kirchheimer Teufelsweibern. The head of the troop is Angelique Guschelbauer. “My father is chairman of the Radentheiner Perchten, we are a purely women’s group.” Which – as is usual with Krampus groups – stays together all year round. “We have 13 members between the ages of 13 and 38 and meet once a month for a meeting. But we are always together in Bad Kleinkirchheim. We go hiking, do a variety of activities and have fun together.” The Weiba have 13 performances this year, two already. They could already be seen in Grafenstein and Radenthein. Do the guests know that only ladies are under the shaggy masks? “No,” smiles Angelique. “Many people want to fight with the Kramperl, unfortunately that happens.” The evil she-devils practice a wide variety of professions. “One girl is in sick care, others are students, in the catering industry, painters or students.” Angelique also knows from a young age that the Krampus are only supposed to instill fear through their appearance. “The Weibagfriessa look horrible,” smiles Guschelbauer. On Saturday there are even groups that take part in the longest Krampus run in Europe to monitor the Krampus and Perchten. The Krampus parade lasts approximately one and a half hours. Afterwards there will be a fair for all the Krampus and fans at the party, and the 13 she-devils can be normal girls again.
