What traffic rules apply in a roundabout? Which city has the most? Test your knowledge in the quiz.

How many roundabouts are there?

There are no official gyro statistics. But it should be a little more than 3000 copies. This is according to data read from the national maps of the Federal Office of Topography 2020.

Are roundabouts obsolete?

While the roundabouts shot up like mushrooms in the 80s and 90s, in recent years there has been more and more talk about the dismantling of roundabouts. In Aargau, but also in Sursee in Lucerne, roundabouts are being replaced by crossings with traffic lights. Is this the beginning of the end of the spinning top era?

Appearances are deceptive. More roundabouts are still being built than are being removed, explains Thomas Maag, spokesman for the Zurich Civil Engineering Office. In principle, roundabouts are still a good solution for liquefying traffic.

In Zurich, the canton with the highest volume of traffic in Switzerland, 20 new roundabouts have been built on the canton’s roads over the past five years. Only one was converted to a crossing during the same period. Roundabouts are only not ideal where traffic has to be controlled and the number of vehicles per branch varies greatly.

We will therefore continue to drive in circles often in the near future.
