(Reuters) – Russia has not yet seen the peace plan for Ukraine mentioned by Italy but hopes to receive it through diplomatic channels, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio outlined the plan last week and said he discussed it with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres during a visit to New York.
“We have not yet seen (the plan). We hope that it will be sent to us through diplomatic channels and that we will be able to read it,” commented Dmitry Peskov.
Luigi Di Maio suggested on Friday during a press conference that international organizations such as the UN, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) intervene as facilitators to allow, as a first time, the implementation of local ceasefires in Ukraine.
In addition to Antonio Guterres, the head of Italian diplomacy said he had presented the outline of this plan to representatives of the G7 member countries.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now Vice-President of the Russian Security Council, gave a cold reception to this initiative and to any other proposal that could come from Western countries.
“It seems that (the plan) was not drawn up by diplomats but by petty political scientists who read a lot of provincial newspapers and are based only on Ukrainian lies,” he wrote on his Telegram account. .
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, whose country was heavily dependent on Russian gas before the war, has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Ukraine. The ruling coalition in Rome is divided over the delivery of more weapons to the Ukrainian army.
