ADVENTURE – The famous sled dog race La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc takes to the snow-covered slopes from January 8 for 11 days of exciting competition. Before the start, we give the floor to those who made the 2021 edition with today the five-time winner, Rémy Coste.
Welcome behind the scenes of the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc! On the occasion of this 18th edition, the mushers involved agreed to answer our questions and gave their thoughts, as the event approaches. Before the start on Saturday and the handing over of his title, Rémy Coste, five-time winner of the event, gives us his impressions and his goals.

What does mushing mean to you? And how long have you been passionate about it?
Rémy Coste: I discovered mushing in Canada in 2004, I then passed my State Diploma to supervise the activity and then I started competition in 2012 during a Trophy of the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc . Mushing punctuates our daily life since in parallel with the competitions we receive tourists in Lapland to share our passion in Swedish Lapland (https://www.sejour-laponie.com/).
What is your state of mind after having won the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc five times?
RC: The motivation is still intact, my goal is to always progress in all areas in order to raise the level of the team. Mushing is a perpetual questioning, each year the counters are reset to zero and everything must be started again to get in shape on D-day. Winning the race several times shows that we are starting to master many performance parameters even if there are still many areas in which there is still room for improvement.

How do you see this 18th edition?
RC: Always so motivated, the preparation has been very good and the team has made further progress compared to last year. I can’t wait to be in the race to see if the sensations in training translate into great performance in competition.
Can you give us the keys to your training for this race?
RC: A lot of rigor and work on all performance parameters: genetic choice, education, diet, training, care, organization, relationship with dogs … Nothing should be left to chance.
Do you have an anecdote about the Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc to share with us?
RC: I love the look of my dogs when we arrive on the first day of the race. They know why we are here, they know the race and it shows in their attitudes.
