LA World Championships: Medal Decisions – Ingebrigtsen Leaves 5000m Gold Cold – Bol’s Crazy Sprint – Sport

  • On the last day of the World Championships in Athletics, Jakob Ingebrigtsen managed to rehabilitate the missed title over 1500 m – but this did not cause the Norwegian to celebrate.
  • Femke Bol reacts to her stumble in the mixed relay in Budapest and leads the Dutch 4×400 m relay with a brilliant final sprint to gold.
  • While an Indian with a Swiss training base is the new javelin world champion, Germany is going completely empty-handed for the first time at a World Cup.

5000 m men: European duel on “not proud” Ingebrigtsen

The old world champion is also the new one. But Jakob Ingebrigtsen made it exciting on Sunday at the World Championships in Athletics in Budapest. In the inner-European duel, the Norwegian only sprinted over Mohamed Katir in the final meters and in 13:11.30 minutes he prevailed by 14 hundredths of a second ahead of the Spaniard. Bronze went to Kenyan Jacob Krop. For Ingebrigtsen it is a duplication of events: as in Eugene a year ago, he had to be content with silver in the 1500 m. The world champion didn’t radiate any particular euphoria: “It’s not always about winning, it’s about showing how good you are. It wasn’t my best, so I’m not proud of it.”

4 x 400 m women: Bol’s mad sprint

In the mixed relay, Femke Bol fell in the last few meters and only received a lot of consolation instead of gold. Now the Dutch woman has managed to rehabilitate – and how. With a brilliant final sprint, she overtook the final runners from Great Britain and Jamaica and secured the world title for the Netherlands in the best time of the year (3:20.72 minutes).

In the men’s category, the American quartet was in a class of its own with a world best time of 2:57.31 minutes. The USA won ahead of France and Great Britain.

Speer men: Chopra cheers and seals German zero

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra can now also call himself world champion – and with him a little bit of Switzerland. The Indian, who trains in Magglingen, threw the javelin at an unbeaten 88.17 m, beating Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan (87.82) and the Czech Olympic silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch (86.67). Because Julian Weber had to settle for fourth place, Germany is leaving for the first time without a single World Cup medal.

800 m women: When two fight …

After 2 years, British Keely Hodgkinson finally managed to oust arch-rival Athing Mu. It still wasn’t enough for gold. Because at the very top, the fast Mary Moraa pulled away. The Kenyan set a personal best of 1:56.03 minutes and celebrated her triumph by jumping across the finish line with joy.

Women’s high jump: First Ukrainian gold

European champion Jaroslawa Mahuchich celebrated the first title for Ukraine in Budapest as the new world champion. The 21-year-old prevailed with a height of 2.01 m in front of the Australians Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers (both 1.99). The latter trains in Switzerland and enthuses: “This is now my second home. Whatever I want, I get.”
