Lab – The performance of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti for laptops under the magnifying glass

Arrived recently on gaming laptops, we were able to test the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, Nvidia’s flagship. We thus passed on our test bench the MSI GE76 Raider which is equipped with it.

Nvidia’s RTX 30 graphics cards have been available in “Ti” versions for a few months on desktop PCs and more recently on laptops. These models embed a few more computing units than their non-Ti counterparts, but also more Tensor cores, cores dedicated to raytracing and video memory. In this case, the RTX 3080 Ti that we are testing increases the video memory from 8 to 16 GB and has more than 1000 more calculation units than the RTX 3080 (7424 against 6144 to be exact). How does this translate to gaming performance? That’s what we wanted to see with the MSI GE76 Raider, an ultra-high-end 17-inch monster equipped with an Intel Core i9-12900HK processor, 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and 2 TB of SSD. Note that the TDP of the RTX 3080 Ti here is 175W and the retail model has 64GB of RAM.

Unparalleled performance

We ran the games in our panel in Full HD definition and needless to say, the 3080 Ti is excellent. It is currently the most efficient graphics card that we have passed on our test bench and it is possible to play the latest AAA titles with the settings pushed to the maximum without problem. To give some examples, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was able to reach 88 fps, Call of Duty Black OPS Cold War 139 fps and Cyberpunk 2077 was able to exceed 60 fps for the first time in our comparison.

When we activate the raytracingthe fps counter necessarily takes a hit, but most games were able to stay above 60 fps, except cyberpunk and The Medium. Fortunately, by activating DLSS – another flagship technology from Nvidia – it is possible to bring up the frame rate of several tens of i/s and to be quiet on that side.

A usable 360 ​​Hz screen?

The screen of the MSI GE76 Raider is refreshed at 360 Hz, a great feat on paper, but can we really enjoy it? Many laptops offer ultra-fast refreshes (marketing forces?) without being able to approach them. This is only of interest in competitive multiplayer games anyway and this limit will probably be reached here on old titles like Counter-Strike. On the most recent Apex Legends, we were only able to display “only” 172 fps on average (graphics pushed to the limit), a nice score, but far from the maximum capacities of the screen. By lowering the quality of most settings to “low” or “medium”, the PC rose to 210 fps on average. Difficult to go much higher therefore, unless you really degrade the visual experience.

The RTX 3080 Ti crushes its competitors in all the games we tested, far ahead of the RTX 3070 Ti of the Asus Strix Scar 17 or the RX6800S of the Zephyrus 14 (which is an ultraportable, that said). It is therefore without a doubt the best graphics card for laptops at the moment (although this may vary depending on the TGP of the card on different computers, let’s not forget). It will allow – in any case on this MSI GE76 Raider – to play with nice graphics for a few years, certainly.
