Lack of caregivers: the AP-HP offers its future recruits housing at a knockdown price

What if this was one of the solutions for attracting healthcare staff: offering company accommodation at low prices and near the hospital? The AP-HP is now relying on this argument to recruit and retain. The hospitals of Paris will offer several hundred apartments in the capital, unaffordable with the salary of a nurse or nursing assistant.

The Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris lacks 1,000 nursing staff. To attract young graduates to the capital, the AP-HP is beginning to deploy a housing assistance system in inner Paris. Some are even allocated apartments with a knock-down rent, this is the case of Grégoire whom Europe 1 met.

A 30m2 at 500 euros per month

Grégoire is a nurse at the Thenon hospital in Paris. The blouse fallen, he has only to take a bus to reach his apartment. “When I see my colleagues who sometimes have 1 hour or 1h30 of transport to come, [je me dis] that it’s really an incredible chance to have 30 minutes of transport.”

Once the door to his sixth-floor apartment is open, the young man finds his brand new 30m2 studio, which he pays for at an unbeatable price. “I have it for 500 euros per month, charges included, so it’s an unbeatable price,” he says at the microphone of Europe 1.

Objective: recruit 2,700 nurses for 2023

This accommodation in the heart of the 19th arrondissement was found by his employer. Offering accommodation 50% cheaper than the market price and close to the workplace is the AP-HP’s strategy to attract the staff that are lacking in Parisian hospitals. “In four years, we have lost 11% of our nursing staff”, recognizes Laëtitia Buffet, deputy director in charge of housing at the AP-HP. “The objective is to succeed in recruiting 2,700 nurses for 2023”, she continues. To do this, the AP-HP will offer 200 homes like Grégoire’s.

From next March, a tutoring bonus will also be introduced within the AP-HP. This bonus of 172 euros net per month should encourage them to supervise trainees and young professionals.
