In January, Lang Lang announced that he had become a father. Now the star pianist reveals whether his son is already showing musical talent.
Lang Lang (39) is named bestseller of the year at this year’s Opus Klassik for his album “Goldberg Variations”. The busy star pianist cannot attend the gala on October 10 in person as he is on tour in the United States. There is also a lot going on with the musician in his private life: In January Lang Lang made public that he had become the father of a son. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, the pianist reveals how this has changed his life and what he values about his wife Gina Alice Redlinger (27).
You will receive an Opus Klassik for your “Goldberg Variations” as bestseller of the year. How happy are you about this award?
Lang Lang: The Goldberg Variations are sometimes referred to as the “Mount Everest” of piano literature. The recording of this masterpiece was a lifelong dream of mine. I am delighted to have been awarded the Opus Klassik for the bestseller of the year.
How proud are you that the Goldberg Variations are still so popular with the public today?
Lang: JS Bach’s music is universal and overcomes time and space. That is why it still touches our souls today. I am so grateful for his music and it gives me great pleasure to be able to share it with today’s audience.
Will you be personally present at the award ceremony?
Lang: I’m on tour in the United States in October, so unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the awards ceremony. But we will definitely celebrate with my German friends when I come to Germany in November and perform the Goldberg Variations.
On the extended version of your album there is also a duet with your wife Gina. What do you like about her as a musical partner?
Lang: Gina has been playing the piano since she was a child and is a wonderful pianist herself. We harmonize so well, not only as wife and husband, but also as musicians. Music plays a big role in our daily life. Gina and I play a lot together.
In January you announced the birth of your son. What is life like as a father?
Lang: I love being a father. The only benefit of the travel restrictions around the globe during the pandemic was that I was able to spend so much time with him and my family.
Does your son already show musical talent?
Lang: I would say: he’s curious. When Gina or I play the piano, he becomes very attentive and tries to join in. It is not yet possible to say whether he is talented.
What private and professional plans do you have for this year?
Lang: This year I would like to present my Goldberg Variations live in concert to my fans in North America and Europe. These dates had to be postponed due to the pandemic and I’m very happy to finally be able to share this music with my fans outside of China. I’m also currently working on my next album. In addition, we are bringing the Lang Lang International Foundation to Europe, which is an exciting step for us.

Opera singer Sonya Yoncheva (39), violinist Daniel Hope (48), clarinetist Martin Fröst (50), opera singer Piotr Beczała (54), trumpeter Lucienne Renaudin Vary (22), cellist will perform at the great Opus-Klassik-Gala on October 10th Pablo Ferrández (30), pianist Daniil Trifonov (30), violinist Ragnhild Hemsing (33) and soprano Fatma Said (* 1991).
The laudators are also prominent: the actors Julia Koschitz (46), Christian Berkel (63) and Hans-Werner Meyer (57) as well as the moderators Sabine Heinrich (44) and Ilka Brecht (55) present the coveted prizes. The moderation is Désirée Nosbusch (56). ZDF broadcasts the award ceremony from the Konzerthaus Berlin on the same evening at 10:15 p.m.
