Soaring prices for basic necessities only on gasoline, stagnating wages, demonstrations, blockades on the roads with angry farmers… Daily life has not been the easiest in recent months for the French, who must now prepare for another hard blowwith the implementation on March 1, 2024 of a new law, proposed by theand Renaissance deputy Frédéric Descrozaille And validated by Parliament in 2023. This law, named after the MP who proposed it, establishes new rules within mass distribution: from now on, promotions on certain products will not be no longer as important, and no longer as regular, at least on certain non-food products. Spray, shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste, diapers, laundry detergent, disposable razors, cotton pads, makeup… these are all products that are essential for everyday life, but on which you will no longer see huge discounts.

A decision that goes poorly with major brands, who are already looking for ways to anticipate any problems, and are therefore planning to sell off stocks (at more than attractive prices). Also on the consumer side, the pill is difficult to swallow, as more and more people have to tighten their belts due to inflation. The lack of promotions should therefore also be reflected in the overall price of the basketwhich will continue to increase this year (an overview was given to households this year with the price of the pancake).

Promotions now capped

If this law provokes protests, in particular because it caps promotions at 34% (no more -70% or -80% that we could find in stores) and that consequently, it limits good deals, it actually aims to protect large-scale distribution suppliers during negotiations. It is more precisely the SMEs, the jobs they generate, and ultimately the farmers, on whom a lot of pressure is put, that it is tempted to save. Thanks to this new measure, suppliers will be in a position of strength if an agreement is not reached, because they will have the possibility of stopping deliveries.
