Blood donors are “heroes”! Laura Wontorra, Motsi Mabuse and Mats Hummels support a DRC campaign as part of World Blood Donor Day.

“Whoever donates blood saves lives.” Soccer World Champion Mats Hummels (34) and other celebrities are campaigning for the German Red Cross as part of World Blood Donor Day on June 14th. The professional from the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund is part of the advertising campaign “#MissingType – only if it’s missing, it’s noticeable” for the DRK blood donation services, which the moderator Laura Wontorra (34) and “Let’s Dance” juror Motsi Mabuse (42) have also joined .

The aim is to attract more people to donate blood. A lack of canned food can have life-threatening consequences, Hummels warns in a forceful manner: “Everyone should be aware that their life can suddenly depend on a blood donation.” Wontorra describes donors as “heroes” who would make an incredibly important contribution “which is irreplaceable for our society”. For Mabuse, blood donors are “lifesavers” who need “as many as possible”.

The current problem: Due to demographic change, around 275,000 blood donors will be lost in the next few years, which could result in life-threatening gaps in the supply. “We absolutely have to prevent that and catch up with new donors from younger generations,” demands Wontorra: “It’s only possible with the help of all of us, because blood cannot be produced artificially.”

Lothar Matthäus and Maria Höfl-Riesch also support the campaign

In addition to Hummels, Wontorra and Mabuse, who can be seen in a joint advertising clip for the blood donation service, other stars also support the campaign. Among them also record national player Lothar Matthäus (62), women’s national player Jule Brand (20), ski jumping world champion Markus Eisenbichler (32), the Bundesliga referee Patrick Ittrich (44) or the multiple Olympic ski champion Maria Höfl-Riesch (38 ). Clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, VfL Wolfsburg and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as well as the DFB were also part of the campaign.

In a statement, Patric Nohe, spokesman for the DRK blood donation services, is overwhelmed by the commitment, especially from the world of sports, because so many people could be reached and encouraged. Nationwide, around 15,000 blood units are needed every day. In order to guarantee the supply, the appointments offered would have to be continuously busy. “Our thanks go to all supporters of the blood donation!” says Nohe.
