The woman who stabbed her husband and then mayor in Lauterbrunnen (BE) in 2022 has been sentenced to inpatient psychiatric treatment.
This was decided by the Bernese Oberland regional court.
A forensic report concluded that the alleged perpetrator was incompetent and suffered from a serious mental illness. According to the report, the 60-year-old woman has suffered from schizophrenia spectrum disorder for several years. At the time of the crime in August 2022, she had the delusional belief that she was being poisoned by her husband.

In mid-August 2022, there was initially a verbal argument in the couple’s house, then a scuffle. The woman finally grabbed a knife and stabbed her partner. The man, who was mayor at the time, suffered 58 stab and cut injuries, from which he died. The wife confessed.
The report goes on to say that the madness is systematized, largely developed, structured and mature. The forecasts are unfavorable. Without adequate therapy, there is a significantly increased likelihood of further violent crimes.
The public prosecutor’s office asked the court to commit the woman to a closed psychiatric clinic as an inpatient measure.
