League of Legends is a game with a long history full of small anecdotes and coincidences that gave rise to the title in the version we know today. On several occasions, it was possible to witness Riot Games’ decisions that seemed trivial, but which changed the history of the game and/or became recurring memes for the community. This is the case with Rammus, who since his launch has become one of the most likeable characters for players due to his few lines of dialogue and the simplicity of his sentences.
Okay, not okay?
What few gamers know about Rammus is that the developers’ initial plans were nothing special. Riot Games used a non-professional voice actor to record the Armored Armadillo’s lines, which were to have lines of dialogue similar to the rest of the characters. However, the result was appalling, and the team had to make an urgent decision. As the publisher has assured in some of his statements revealing anecdotes about the characters, the disaster was such that those in charge did not even want the rest of the team to listen to the recording.
Due to this disaster, a company employee had to take responsibility and recorded a series of tentative sentences in just fifteen minutes. The goal was for them to be used to perform the champion’s final launch tests. Between this exceptional situation and their lack of experience at the time, they decided to bet on simple things. However, when Rammus was launched, the developers decided not to change his lines, because at that time League of Legends was releasing a new champion every two weeks. Time caught up with the studio and they had no other satisfying options.
Cache misery or stroke of genius?
Given the lack of experience of Rammus’ improvised voice actor, only short and simple phrases were recorded. The goal was above all to go to the essentials, to be able to test the champion in correct conditions. At first, the armadillo was to be doubled, but the community very quickly defended its current version. The sobriety of the replicas and its famous Ok! became real memes, and players didn’t want us to touch them. That’s why even today, Rammus is still so quiet.
This kind of anecdote is more common than it seems. For example, it is known that Corki’s voice actor was an amateur, who only received $300 for his performance. If today this is stingy compared to the means of Riot Games and Tencent, at the time the studio was much smaller and tried to save as much as possible., unaware that their game would become a major success. However, given the lack of means available for dubbing at the time, it is especially surprising that the majority of the first champions of the game had more than adequate dubbing and that the case of Rammus was not more widespread.
