Leak in line – liquid manure in several bodies of water: environmental alarm triggered

During agricultural work on Wednesday afternoon in Ratten (Weiz district), liquid manure got into several bodies of water. A chemical alarm has been triggered.

At around 2:30 p.m., a couple spread liquid manure on a steeply sloping meadow in the Kirchenviertel district. This was pressed into hoses with a pump and then sprayed onto the meadow using a turret. For reasons currently unknown, there was a leak along the hose line. The liquid manure that ran out flowed onto the meadow and from there into a small stream that flows into the Niesnitzbach. The Niesnitzbach subsequently flows into the Feistritz. The alarmed Ratten fire brigade immediately set up blocking measures. The municipality of Ratten used an excavator to dig a barrier so that the liquid manure inflow into the Niesnitzgraben was interrupted shortly after the technical problem. The mixture was pumped into a slurry tank by a farmer and applied to a nearby meadow. The stream also feeds three fish ponds, one of which had to be pumped out by the fire brigade. The fish population could be preserved. The state warning center was notified and a chemical alarm was triggered.
