Legislative: for left-wing candidates ousted by Nupes, “there is no room for individual adventures”

Legislative elections 2022case

In the name of the union, found on Wednesday between the main left-wing parties, candidates are withdrawing from the race in favor of those invested by the alliance. Other disappointed, rarer, still intend to run for a constituency in June.

This is the direct consequence of the agreement reached on Wednesday between the main forces of the left in view of the June legislative elections: many pre-invested candidates must withdraw in favor of other nominations decided at the end of negotiations between the pundits of the different parties. Obviously heartbreaking, but the vast majority of these ousted put aside their disappointment in favor of the union of the left.

The day after the formalization of this alliance, all you have to do is take a quick look at social networks to see the posts of dozens of fallen candidates announcing their withdrawal. Some are sometimes alike word for word. “Following the agreements for a New Popular Ecological and Social Union, I withdraw my candidacy. The rally is on, let’s go, it’s urgent! enthuses Aurélie Traoré, initially EE-LV leader in the 2nd district of Calvados.

Nominated candidate by the environmental pole for the 14th district of the Rhône, Thomas Fournier says he brings “his most sincere support” to the journalist Taha Bouhafs, invested with the label La France insoumise, also emphasizing “the historic alliance that is Nupes”. Originally invested by the PCF with the objective of taking the 8th district of Ille-et-Vilaine, the departmental coordinator of the Young Communists, Elsa Koerner, indicates on Twitter “at the disposal of the victory of the left in Rennes against Florian Bachelier”, labeled LREM.

“One goal”

Same posture for the disappointed labeled LFI. In charge of digital strategy within the campaign team of the insoumis during the presidential election, Bastien Parisot also recalls that “programmatic agreements on the left are historic” and remember “one goal” with the one who is preparing to replace him in the 3rd district of Paris, the ecologist Léa Balage El Mariky.

Until now leader of the 4th constituency of Loire-Atlantique for the Popular Union, Maxime Viancin wishes for his part “Welcome to the South Loire” to Julie Laernoes, the vice-president of Nantes Métropole and president of the environmentalist and citizen group, to whom he therefore gives up his place.

“Give a hand”

Others appear less enthusiastic, but swallow their bitterness. For the rebellious Nicolas Pellegrini, forced to give up his place in the 6th district of Gard, “this agreement includes a distribution of the candidacies and a gathering around them”, he “requires counterparties, and reaching out. […] From now on, past the disappointment, we must move forward, and remember why we are all here: the hope that is rising is powerful, and it is up to us to offer it a political outlet. “We also had better established candidates, […] but for the victory in June there is no room for individual adventures”, slips on his side Nathan Guedj, co-secretary of the green party for the Rhône department, who nevertheless welcomes the “good decision of the Federal Council of EE-LV”.

And then there are the dissidents. Those who, despite the signed agreement, do not intend to let go of their constituency and refuse the “surrender” to Jean-Luc Melenchon. The communist mayor of Vénissieux and vice-president of the metropolis of Lyon, Michèle Picard, thus refuses to evade the benefit of Taha Bouhafs and intends to run for the 14th district of the Rhône. A “parachute”, she assures the Obs. “A mayor has his hands dirty, he knows the difficulties, the files… It’s easier to defend a certain number of files in the National Assembly […]. I am the most able to unite the left.” The interested party reacted on Twitter, he denounces a “decision [qui] would be regrettable and would go against the tide of the desire for union of the people on the left. There is still time to come to your senses.” he launched.
