Legislative Manuel Bompard elected hands down in the constituency of Jean-Luc Mélenchon

Propelled to the National Assembly, Manuel Bompard thus recovers the seat of the Insoumis leader, who did not stand for re-election. By heading for Matignon, Jean-Luc Mélenchon left his heir a golden constituency, since the latter – a communist stronghold until the 1990s – had largely voted for him five years ago (59.9% of the vote in the second round of the legislative elections) and last April (54.4% of the vote in the first round of the presidential election).

Defeated 5 years ago

For Manuel Bompard, this easy victory is also a small revenge, five years after being defeated in Toulouse in the 9th constituency of Haute-Garonne by Sandrine Mörch, a candidate for La République en Marche. Failing to be a representative of the pink city, the 36-year-old chief negotiator of La France insoumise will be that of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd arrondissements of Marseille, as well as part of the 5th and 6th arrondissements of the Marseille city.

A difficult territory where, according to INSEE, nearly 43% of the population lives below the poverty line, three times more than at the national level (14.5%). It is also in this constituency, in the Noailles district, that the two buildings on rue d’Aubagne collapsed in 2018. The tragedy, which caused the death of eight residents in 2018, then underlined the insalubrity of the houses in the district.
